Here are the announcements of events, initiatives, funding opportunities, and other news for the week of January 5-9, 2009, from the Social Science Research Institute and its units: the Children, Youth, and Families Consortium, Population Research Institute, Survey Research Center, SLIC, and Smart Spaces Center.

Funding Opportunities

The Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership (CGP) has issued a request for proposals: "Funding for Intellectual Exchange Projects." Small grants of up to $10,000 are available. Submission of preliminary concept papers of 2-3 pages is on a rolling basis, but no later than Friday, February 27, 2009. See information, criteria, and application process.

The William T. Grant Foundation invites letters of inquiry for youth research; the deadline for letters of inquiry is January 9, 2009.

Initiatives

The Arete Initiative at the University of Chicago announces a new multidisciplinary research initiative, "New Science of Virtues," that seeks contributions from individuals and from teams of investigators working within the humanities and the sciences. Grants range from $50,000 to $300,000. The deadline for letters of intent is March 2, 2009, 5:00 p.m. CST. View details.

Events

January 14, 2009, 3:30 p.m., 113 IST, Cybertorium Distinguished Lecture Series on Network Science & Research presents a talk by Mark Newman, University of Michigan, on "Networks and Influence." Presentation will be broadcast live via streaming video.

January 15, 2009, 4:00 to 5:30 p.m., 254 Moore Karen Emmorey, Professor at San Diego State University, will present a talk, "The Psycholinguistic and Neural Consequences of Bimodal Bilingualism," co-sponsored by the Center for Language Science (CLS) and Specialization in Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience Program (SCAN). January 16, 2009, 12:15 to 1:15 p.m., The Living Center, 110 Henderson Friday Teas with FRDC presents Dr. Cleopatra Caldwell, Associate Professor of Health Behavior & Health Education, University of Michigan, who will speak on, "Pathways to Prevention: Influencing the Parenting Attitudes and Behaviors of Non-Resident African American Fathers as Protection against Adolescent Risk Behaviors."
