Funding Opportunities

February 1, 2009 deadline: The Dirksen Congressional Center invites applications for grants to fund research on congressional leadership and the U.S. Congress. Applications are accepted at any time. All application materials must be received on or before February 1, 2009. Awards will be announced in March 2009. Complete information about eligibility and application procedures may be found at The Center's Web site. Frank Mackaman is the program officer.

Two Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) FOAs:

AHRQ Health Services Research Projects (R01):
The FOA, PA-09-070, supports large research extramural grants. The first application receipt date is March 9, 2009.

AHRQ Health Services Research Demonstration and Dissemination Grants (R18):
This FOA, PA-09-071, solicits large research demonstration and dissemination projects. The first application receipt date is March 9, 2009.

NIDA announcement: Notice of Intent to Publish a Request for Applications (RFA) for Trauma, Stress and Substance Use and Abuse among U.S. Military Personnel, Veterans and their Families (NOT-DA-09-004) was released on January 7, 2009. The RFA is expected to be published in the spring of 2009 with an expected receipt date in August of 2009. Please go to the NIH Guide or contact Eve E. NIH Peer Review Changes

NIH will begin to implement a number of changes to the peer review process that apply to most applications submitted for the January 2009 deadline and beyond. The new system of reviewing and scoring applications, that is designed to increase reliability, consistency and transparency include: 1) scores on a 9-point rating scale; 2) enhanced review criteria with individual scoring; 3) formatted reviewer critiques; 4) clustering of new investigators, and 5) single resubmissions.

Wednesday, January 21, 2009, 12:00 noon - 1:00 p.m., 502 Keller Building: "Livelihood Options for the Future: The Case for Community Currencies," a seminar presented by Paul Maina, Director of the Child and Youth Empowerment Center, Nyeri, Kenya. The seminar co-sponsors are ICIK and Penn State Berks Campus.

Thursday, January 22, 2009, 1:30 - 2:30 p.m., 541 Deike Building: "Sustainable Settlement and Economic Empowerment of Landless Populations in Kenya: A Collaborative Intervention Approach by Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Kimathi University College of Technology and the Children and Youth Empowerment Centre," a lecture by Professor Esther Kahangi, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research, Production and Extension at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology in Kenya. The seminar co-sponsors are the Office on International Programs, College of Agricultural Sciences and the Alliance for Earth Sciences, Engineering and Development in Africa, College of Earth and Mineral Sciences.

Monday, January 26, 2009, 3:00 p.m., Foster Auditorium, 101 Pattee Library: "Mind Wars: Brain Research and National Defense," presented by Jonathan D. Moreno, University of Pennsylvania. This lecture is sponsored by the Bioethics without Borders Lecture Series and addresses some of the issues raised by new fMRI research.

Other Announcements

The ERP Boot Camp, an NIH-funded summer workshop on the ERP technique, will be held July 20-29, 2009 at UC-Davis. It is intended for beginning and intermediate ERP researchers, and for both basic scientists and clinical researchers. Applications are due March 1, 2009.
