Here are the announcements of events, initiatives, funding opportunities, and other news for the week of October 20-24, 2008, from the Social Science Research Institute and its units: the Children, Youth, and Families Consortium, Population Research Institute, Survey Research Center, SLIC, and Smart Spaces Center.

Funding Opportunities
A new NSF funding mechanism, EArly-concept Grants for Exploratory Research (EAGER), will begin January 2009. This new mechanism replaces SGER grants. Please see pages 11-19 or page 47 of this document for details. (.pdf document)
Events
October 22, 2008, Khanjan Mehta will present a talk, "Social Entrepreneurship and Indigenous Knowledge," noon-1:00 p.m., 502 Keller Building. The talk is sponsored by the ICIK Seminar Series and will focus on the basics of social entrepreneurship and lessons learned working on such ventures in East Africa. One such venture is the Mashavu: Networked Health Solutions for the Developing World. There will be discussion following the presentation.
October 28, 2008, the ARC Nelson Mandela Lecture Series presents, Myriam J.A. Chancy, who will speak about, "Cosmopolitanism, Transnationalism and Identity: Cross-diasporic Representations of the Rwandan Genocide." This event occurs at 7:00 p.m., The Nittany Lion Inn, Ballroom A-B.
