Susan M. McHale, professor of human development, has accepted the position of director of the Social Science Research Institute (SSRI), and Children Youth, and Families Consortium (CYFC), effective July 1.

McHale received her master's and doctoral degrees in developmental psychology from the University of North Carolina in 1979, and her bachelor's degree in psychology from Bucknell University in 1975. She began her career in 1979 as a postdoctoral fellow in the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1980, McHale came to Penn State as an assistant professor of human development, was promoted to associate professor in 1986, and was promoted to full professor in 1994. She has also served as co-professor-in-charge of the graduate program from 1998-2002 and interim head of human development and family studies from 2002-2003.

McHale is well-known in the field of children's and adolescents' family relationships including sibling relationship dynamics and the family experiences that foster similarities and differences in the interests, attributes and developmental trajectories of sisters and brothers. She has enjoyed a strong history of funding from the National Institutes of Health and support from foundations including the Carnegie Corp. of New York and the March of Dimes.

"Since the inception of the CYFC and most recently with the creation of the SSRI, I have had the privilege of working with several outstanding leaders, including Karen L. Bierman, Mark Hayward and Nan Crouter. I am confident that Dr. McHale will continue on the same path providing creative and strategic leadership," said Eva J. Pell, senior vice president for research and dean of The Graduate School.
