GIS in the Social Sciences
The Geographic Information Systems in the Social Sciences initiative is designed to facilitate the appropriate use of geospatial data in the social sciences. The research unit supports research activities through the provision of services and functions in several areas: expert advice in the application of GIA methods and techniques; mapping/cartography; geocoding/address-matching; contextual database creation/ecological data sets; geospatial data archive/management; geospatial data acquisition; spatial statistics and custom programming; and GIS training. Traditional GIS (data capture/entry, manipulation, storage and production tasks, such as scanning, digitizing, and printing) as well as the application of spatial analytical techniques to social science data are all supported. GIS services are used in different, sometimes multiple, stages of a research project (i.e., sample design, data collection, data manipulation, data validation, data analysis and data visualization). Staff expertise includes the customizing of GIS applications and Internet mapping server technologies to share and present data. GIS staff members continually acquire new and maintain many existing geospatial databases and invest in appropriate hardware, software and resource materials.
