Student Research Projects

During the Fall semester of 2008, research associate Greg Olsen conducted a design studio with 4th and 5th year architects, landscape architects and architectural engineers (see the full report). The purpose of this studio was to develop community-wide elder-friendly master plans for each of the home towns of participating students. Students conducted brief opportunity/needs assessments and then developed informed plans that would better suit the needs of the elderly residents in each town.

The project has continued into the Spring 2009 semester with four students from the fall semester. As interns, the students are engaging with residents of a local community in order to identify the needs of elders in the community. This type of engaged research benefits both students and residents, and the data gathered will be utilized to improve the needs assessment process for small and rural Pennsylvania municipalities.
