FAQ

What is the Survey Research Center (SRC)? Where did it come from?
We are the Survey Research Center at the Pennsylvania State University. We began operations in Fall 2001 with an assignment to provide research methodology assistance and data collection services to faculty and students. Emphasis was placed on facilitating interdisciplinary research concepts and proposals.

What does the SRC do? What services does it provide?
We provide various academic research tasks--from consultation on methodologies, to providing data collection via several different modes, to some support for data analysis. We also help refine and select samples, help with question wording and survey design, hire and train data collectors or interviewers, and provide documentation for all phases of project implementation.

Is the SRC a Penn State unit? Yes! We are a unit within SSRI (the Social Science Research Institute), which is part of Penn State's Office of the Senior Vice President for Research.

Does the SRC charge for its services? What are the charges?
The process of estimating a project's cost and the time we spend on that process is gratis. HOWEVER, sorry--but, yes, we do charge for our services. Charges are based on Penn State's policies for "charge out rates" as well as the actual costs of materials, postage, or other supplies used.

I am not a Penn State faculty member or student. Would I still be able to acquire SRC services for my project?
Yes! Actually, we handle data collection and reporting for many non-Penn State clients.

Where is the SRC located?
We have offices in two locations. Our administrative offices and our Field Division personnel are located on Penn State's main campus at University Park in Pond Lab. Our Phone, Mail, and Web Division personnel are located in Marion Place on the corner of East Nittany and Pugh streets in State College.

Does the SRC employ students?
We do employ students in our Phone Division as part-time interviewers. We also employ students for clerical tasks (also part-time) in our Field and Mail Divisions.

Whom should I contact for more information?
